Food, glorious food!
From wholesome family meals to forbidden midnight feasts, food can unlock both memory and desire. In this workshop, we explore the emotional influence of food, the use of cuisine in literature, and how taste, smell and hunger can serve as tools for developing characters and creating emotionally charged scenes.
We invite you to explore gastronomic delight in classic and modern literature and discuss the representation of both the hungry and the satiated. Through guided prompts and short writing exercises, you will come away with delicious scenes, scrumptious settings and tasteful techniques to develop characterisation and plot in your own writing.
Writers of all levels are warmly welcome.

About our workshops
We run workshops every six weeks at The Yard in Ely, and also work in collaboration with Hot Numbers on Trumpington Steet, Cambridge, and Anglia Ruskin University. Keep an eye on our social media for exciting new workshop locations!

Workshops are for everyone, whether you're a seasoned author or just starting out. They last one and a half to two hours, and typically involve three or four exercises with a fifteen-minute break. Sharing with others is not compulsory, though you may find that getting feedback from people on your table sparks new ideas or helps you solve a tricky problem. Our workshops are suitable for ages 12 and over, though we focus on writing aimed at adults.
